Typical vault in nitrate archive. Each of these vaults has shelving space for over 100 cans, giving the facility the official capacity of 145,056 reels of film. To limit potential losses due to combustion of the unstable nitrate films, the shelves are designed to hold only a few items each, with room to set items back from the edges. Dual sprinklers in each vault run down the full extent along the front of each of the shelves, and a blow-out vent at the back of each vault runs for 25 feet to the surface to vent outside in an emergency.
